What Makes Us Tic is a student-produced documentary that aims to increase education and awareness for Tourette Syndrome (TS). Through personal stories, professional interviews, event footage, and an integrated short film, the goal of this film is to present Tourette Syndrome in a more positive, inspiring light. Tourette Syndrome affects between 1/100 to 1/1000 children in North America, but despite these statistics, the is still so little that is known by the general public about the disorder. This lack of information will often lead to the misunderstanding and judgement of those with the disorder, and the stigma created by the media.

Watch the original film here...What Makes Us Tic is actually an updated version of an original film I made in grade nine of the same name. The film ended up being half an hour long, and contained interviews from over ten different people. I am creating an updated version of the film so as to fix some technical issues, and expand on the film and it's goals. But here is the original film so you can a feel for what I am trying to do!

It is because of this that I am creating a documentary exploring what it means to be someone living with Tourette Syndrome, and they can be best supported by the people around them. I also want to present the film in a way that appeals to a variety of audiences, in which every person who views this film will be able to view Tourette Syndrome in a new way. Whether the audience consists of parents wanting to gain a better understanding of their child's disorder, or teachers who want to learn how to provide better support to students with Tourettes, or even children and teens with Tourette Syndrome who just want to be reassured that they are not so different from everyone else. This film will provide the education and resources to do exactly that. In addition to the film, corresponding lesson plans, activities, and info sheets will be produced that anyone can use to help others better understand the disorder!
